Message from the Co-Chair
Vivien Yung, Regional VP Personal Banking, Bank of Montreal
It is my pleasure to welcome you to one of this city’s most anticipated events on the social calendar: The 26th annual Dragon Ball!
It is my distinct honour to be the co-chair of this event, which supports the tremendous work of Yee Hong – the agency that has literally changed the lives of our parents and grandparents in Toronto’s Chinese community.
As a Bank of Montreal employee, I take great pride in my company’s own involvement with Yee Hong, which goes back to its very beginnings, when Dr. Joseph Wong first recognized the need to create a caring place where our aging relatives could live their lives in an environment attuned to their values and traditions.
So was born the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care, and so was born the Dragon Ball to raise funds for the centre to build it and operate it.
Our former chief executive officer, Tony Comper, and his wife Elizabeth, were inspired by Dr. Wong’s vision, and Elizabeth became a tireless worker to raise funds for the cause. It was 20 years ago that Dr. Wong’s vision was realized, and the doors opened for the first time at the Yee Hong Centre in Scarborough. Now, I am proud to say that 20 years later, Elizabeth Comper’s role in helping make it all happen has been formally recognized, as the McNicoll Centre’s Community Centre was named in her honour.
Sadly, Elizabeth was not there to witness the naming ceremony – she passed away earlier this year – but her memory will live on in the Centre she devoted so much time to.
So, we at BMO are committed to the work of Yee Hong, and we are committed to supporting Canada’s Chinese communities across the country. Our current CEO, Bill Downe has pledged his own support to the Dragon Ball and is looking forward to being the Honorary Chair at the Ball next February.
It is a most worthwhile cause and I thank all the sponsors for lending their support to the Ball organizers. It is truly a glittering event!
Thank you for your support and I look forward to welcoming all of you to the Allstream Centre at Exhibition Place on Saturday, February 21st, for the 2015 Dragon Ball!
